My visit to the Opera House....

I was born an hour south of Sydney, and I have been on a whole lot of weird and wonderful adventures around the world.... but up until last weekend I had never been to the Sydney Opera House. My daughter's dance school organized a dance trip to Sydney and we went to see West Side Story at the Opera House. WOW, what a night to remember.... and I don't know what happened to my little boat baby, but all of a sudden she is wearing heels and trying to be taller than me. There we are on the dinghy in Bequia together one minute..... and in the blink of an eye.... this.... It was a special weekend away, but one...

Exploring the Caribbean

During our 10 years in the Caribbean, we spent a lot of time living and working in St.Maarten.  We did various jobs there, and always worked hard saving up the next lot of money to go sailing again.  For a year and a half I worked as Marketing Manager for St.Maarten's 12 Metre Regatta.  This is a tour company that had 5 famous America's Cup yachts, and would take tourists out racing.  They had the original Stars n Stripes boat that Dennis Conner had won the America's Cup with, as well as a couple of famous Canadian boats.  They would stage actual races around stunning Great Bay.  Here I am aboard Canada's True North IV.   After we had our...

One love Haiti

Back in late 2009 I had the privilege of visiting the island of Haiti on a buyer's trip.  I have to say it was one of the most amazing islands in the Caribbean .....and I was lucky enough to visit a lot of the Caribbean islands over the years. Out on the streets itself it was clear to see that the people were poor, and they were trying to etch a living out of very little. Those with a little entrepreneurial spirit had their stores set up on the streets. The streets of Port-au-Prince are busy with activity. But nothing gets you used to seeing UN vehicles around the streets. At the end of a busy hot day out and about though,...

A sailing kid...

You don't often stop to think about how your childhood shapes the adult you become, but this week a post went live in our social media with this photo of me on a yacht in Fiji at 7 years of age. How does a suburban kid from Australia end up on a yacht in Fiji.... well that is a story in itself.  My dad's sister (Aunty Jane) had met and married an intrepid surfer guy (Uncle Mick) who was sailing around the Pacific Islands on a yacht that he and a bunch of his mates had built in Perth, Western Australia.  These guys had taken turns going out to work in the outback mines to earn money for the boat,...

Christmas list for island girls

Christmas looms closer and our shopping reaches a level of harried craziness.  Just shop shop shop to check those names off your Christmas list.... done. done. done. This Christmas I was trying to create a LIST for us island girls.... something that you can just forward to your love ones to say - "well I love all of them, or I love no.2 and 3" subtle hints to ensure you get things you like.   AND if you are not sure you will get anything you like, what I normally do is, buy a few things for myself and wrap them up.  The card reads "Dear Kim, thanks so much for everything you do.  Love Kim" and one gift a...
